Best wipes for dogs: how to pick the right type for the job

The best wipes for dogs depend on the job. For paws and body, start with Earth Rated Unscented: the maker states an 8 x 8 in. sheet, no added fragrance, no alcohol and an 8-week minimum age. Wipes for ears, eyes, teeth and skin infections are different products, and each has its own guide.

Not veterinary advice. This page has not been reviewed by a veterinarian; it summarizes published veterinary sources, linked in the text. If your pet has a skin problem, a wound, or symptoms that do not clear up, talk to your vet.

This page sorts dog wipes by type and job and sends you to the guide for paws, sensitive skin, body odor, puppies, teeth and medicated wipes. Maker-by-maker detail is on dog wipe brands compared. Read the label first.

Our pick: Earth Rated Unscented

It is the closest all-round match between label and job. The sheet is large, no fragrance is added, and a minimum age is stated. The maker prints the full ingredient list, which includes phenoxyethanol, and says the wipes are free of alcohol and parabens. It adds that the list is subject to change, so check the pack. The Earth Rated review has the full data.

Two cautions. The maker describes the wipes as formulated for dogs and says some cat owners use them, with a vet to consult for cats. The lavender version lists lavender oil, so skip it in a home with a cat that grooms itself. For the shortest label, take Pogi's below.

Wet wipes for dogs: the main types

Everyday grooming wipes are the default. They are damp sheets with a mild cleanser for paws, coat, rear end and face. This is the type most people mean by pet wipes for dogs. Packs call them grooming wipes for dogs or dog body wipes.

Hypoallergenic and sensitive-skin wipes are everyday wipes with a gentler pitch. The word has no regulated meaning, and the hypoallergenic guide shows what to read instead.

Deodorizing wipes add a scent or an odor-binding ingredient. They clean the surface. They don't remove the cause of a smell that keeps coming back.

Medicated wipes, the antibacterial wipes for dogs, contain an active such as chlorhexidine or ketoconazole. VCA notes that pets should not lick or chew the area for at least 30 minutes after use (see its chlorhexidine page). They are for a diagnosed problem. Start with chlorhexidine wipes for dogs.

Ear wipes are for the outer ear and visible folds, never the canal. Eye and tear-stain wipes are small pads for the eye corners and face folds. The safe-use rules differ from a body wipe, so each has its own guide.

Puppy wipes state a minimum age and are usually milder. See puppy wipes. Dental wipes are for the teeth and gums and belong with a different routine; see dog dental wipes.

Burt's Bees also makes dog and puppy wipes. They get a review instead of a card, because we found no readable maker page to build a card from. Petkin's thick-sheet wipe has its own review too.

Six label checks before you buy

  1. Fragrance. Dogs lick their paws and coat, so fragrance-free is the safer default. "Unscented" and "fragrance-free" differ: only the second claims that no fragrance is added.
  2. Alcohol. See alcohol in the ingredient reference. The MSD Veterinary Manual covers alcohol toxicosis in animals. A wipe on a small area is a different exposure from drinking alcohol. Still, "alcohol-free" on the label settles it. Many makers don't publish it.
  3. Sheet size. A bigger sheet means fewer wipes for a big dog. Sizes in the tables are the maker's own.
  4. Age. For a young puppy, trust only a minimum age the maker states. The puppy guide has the details.
  5. Cat flag. Each card shows what the label says about cats. A cat that grooms itself can lick whatever a dog wipe leaves on a shared bed.
  6. Skin. Redness, odor or constant licking is a reason to call the vet. Switching wipes won't fix it.

Ingredient flags come from the ingredient reference. For the same checks applied to sensitive skin, see hypoallergenic dog wipes. Field definitions are on how we research.

Runner-ups: Pogi's and Earthbath

Pogi's is the pick for a short label. The maker lists an 8 x 9 in. bamboo-fiber sheet and seven ingredients, with no alcohol and no added fragrance. It states no minimum age and nothing on cats. Packs come in 100 and 400 counts, plus 120 and 240 travel packs. Reviews: Pogi's, or Earth Rated vs Pogi's head to head.

Earthbath's hypoallergenic wipe is the one with the earliest stated age: 6 weeks. It is fragrance-free and alcohol-free, with a full ingredient list, per the maker. It is a dog product, and Earthbath sells a separate cat wipe. The sheet size isn't published. "Hypoallergenic" is the maker's word, so read the hypoallergenic guide, where this wipe has its card, before you rely on it.

One more everyday wipe suits a home with both species: TropiClean's hypoallergenic wipe is named by the maker for dogs and cats and called fragrance-free, though it states no sheet size or alcohol status. For more makers side by side, see dog wipe brands compared. Scented options, including TropiClean's berry and coconut wipe, are in the deodorizing guide.

Face wipes and ear wipes for dogs

Use a product made for the area. A body wipe near the eyes or in the ear canal is the wrong tool, and it is not a dental wipe either (see dog dental wipes).

For the outer ear, Zymox's enzymatic wipe is fragrance-free and published with a full ingredient list. The maker says it suits dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. It contains PEG-75 lanolin and benzyl alcohol, so check those if your dog is sensitive. The maker says it is not a treatment for an active ear infection. Painful, smelly or discharging ears need a vet first. The ear wipe guide explains why.

For face wipes for dogs, Nootie's tear stain wipes are 60 small pre-soaked pads with a glycerin and aloe vera base, per the maker, and are titled for dogs and cats. The maker doesn't state a pad size. They are for the outside of the eye area only. Red, cloudy or squinting eyes need a vet. See dog eye wipes.

When to skip a wipe

  • You need a medicated wipe. None of the everyday wipes above has an active ingredient. See dog wipes for yeast.
  • Your dog reacts to scent. Skip scented wipes and read the hypoallergenic guide.
  • A cat that licks everything shares the home. Skip wipes with essential oils and read are dog wipes safe for cats.
  • The same problem returns every week: smell, licking, red skin. A wipe cleans the surface and diagnoses nothing.

How these picks were made

Each pick has a maker page we could read. Products known only from retailer listings are left out of the picks, which limits the list. We have not tested any wipe, and we use no prices or ratings. "Best for" means the closest match between a label and a job, with no performance ranking behind it. Health sources: VCA on chlorhexidine and the MSD Veterinary Manual on alcohols. Product data checked against maker pages on 2026-10-15. Formulas change, so confirm on the pack.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best wipes for dogs?

For paws and body, start with Earth Rated Unscented: the maker states an 8 x 8 in. sheet, no added fragrance, no alcohol and an 8-week minimum age, and prints a full ingredient list. For a shorter list, look at Pogi's. For ears, eyes, teeth or medicated jobs, use the narrower guides below.

Are dog wipes safe for dogs?

Wipes made for dogs are meant for external use on the coat, paws and skin folds. The formula decides the risk. Check for alcohol, xylitol and essential oils, because dogs lick what is left behind. The ingredient reference lists each one with sources.

Can you use dog wipes every day?

No source we found sets a daily limit. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free wipes are the usual choice for frequent use. If the skin looks dry, red or flaky, cut back and ask your vet. Wiping can't fix an underlying skin problem.

Can I use regular wipes for dogs?

Occasionally, and only unscented ones. Alcohol, fragrance and some preservatives are the problem. The full answer, with sources, is in can you use baby wipes on dogs.

How do I choose pet wipes?

Start with the body part and the job (paws, face, ears, general body). Then check the label for fragrance, alcohol, sheet size and your pet's age. With a cat in the house, read the cat flag first. The table near the top of this page covers the first step.

Do pet wipes expire?

Our product records don't include a shelf life, so check the pack for a date or an open-jar symbol. A tub left unsealed dries out. Close the lid firmly after each use.

Can dog wipes be used on cats?

Only if the label says so. Some wipes are labeled for both species and some say dogs only. Scented wipes with essential oils, tea tree oil above all, are the concern for cats. See are dog wipes safe for cats.
