Muddy paws after walks: Earth Rated Unscented

Mud is the everyday job. A paw is small, but four of them plus a belly use up sheets, and a bigger sheet gives you a clean section for each foot. Dogs lick their paws too, so fragrance-free is our default filter.

Earth Rated is our pick here. It also carries Leaping Bunny certification, a cruelty-free program that says nothing about safety. The maker prints the full ingredient list (marked subject to change) and says the wipes are free from alcohol and parabens. Winter and road salt: rinse first

No wipe is the right first step for paws caked in salt or de-icer. Rinse them. The ASPCA advises wiping paws as soon as the dog is inside and limiting licking until they are clean. The paw guide covers the rinse.

After the rinse, a fragrance-free wipe dries and finishes the job. If the same paws sting or crack every winter, that is a vet question.

Big dogs and big paws

Searches for "extra large dog wipes" mix two ideas: a bigger sheet and a thicker one. Makers say "thick" often, and none publishes a thickness. Only sheet size appears in maker data, so that is the comparison here.

For a 70-pound dog, a full wipe-down takes several sheets however big they are. If you wipe daily, weigh size against pack count. A 400-count tub of 8 x 8 in. sheets covers more ground than a 50-count pack of unmeasured "XL" sheets.

Pogi's is our pick for big dogs. The maker lists 8 x 9 in. bamboo-fiber sheets and seven ingredients: water, aloe vera extract, vitamin E, awapuhi extract, cucumber extract, polysorbate 20 and benzoic acid, with no alcohol and no added fragrance. Natural Dog Company is the short-label alternative. The maker lists aloe vera, witch hazel and decyl glucoside, plus purified water, gluconolactone, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. The wipes are extra-large and the maker says they are not medicated. Scent, sheet dimensions and cat suitability are not published. It sells separate moisturizing paw wipes, so check which product you are buying.

One other large-format wipe, from Wahl, lists a 12.6 x 11.8 in. sheet, but we couldn't confirm that it is sold in the US, so we don't feature it. We also skip Petazy's 8 x 8 in. 400-count wipe because all we have is retailer data. Sensitive paws: Earthbath hypoallergenic

Earthbath is the one to take if your dog's paws react. It is fragrance-free and alcohol-free per the maker, which publishes the full ingredient list, states a 6-week minimum age, lists 100% Biobased and Cruelty Free certifications and says the wipes are made in the USA. Scented wipes and dog-and-cat homes

TropiClean's Tushy & Paw wipe is the scented pick. The maker markets it for dogs and cats. The ingredient list includes "Berry and Coconut Fragrance", so skip it for a dog with a known fragrance reaction. Sheet size, material and minimum age are not published.

Earthbath and Earth Rated each state a minimum age, alcohol-free status and a full ingredient list. Pogi's has the list and alcohol-free status but no age. Plain paw wipes carry no medicated active. When paws need a vet

• The skin between the toes is red, wet or smelly, or the dog licks constantly. VCA's yeast dermatitis page lists these as signs for a vet to check.
